I have a ten week old Jack Russell puppy who I have had for almost two weeks. In that time he has proved himself to be a real sweetie but I am worried that I am making a rod for my own back in handling him too much. When he's tired he will only sleep if he has close physical contact - snuggled up in my arm pit or he especially likes to be cradled in my arms like a baby - on his back. I have tried putting him in his own bed and encouraging him to go to sleep on his own but this results in him getting over-excited and results in biting behaviour and generally looking for trouble.
I am aware that he is still young and needs a lot of sleep.
Also I have to return to work soon and will be leaving the puppy on his own for several hours. I will only be working for three afternoons a week and will be with him for the rest of the week. Is ten weeks too young to leave a puppy on his own? What can I expect to find when I return? Is there anything I can be doing to make the separation easier?
