Lab puppy growling

2 weeks ago we got an 8 week old lab puppy.  He is rarely on his own, (we waited for the school summer holidays,) and when left this is for no more than two and a half hours in a cage.  He has slept well at night from the very first night.  Again he is left in a cage downstairs, he whined for a little while on the first few nights, but this has stopped.  He wakes early, (usually around 5.30am, but we have no problem with this and let him out etc.)  He eats well, we have had very few "accidents" in the house and I think he is on the way to being house trained.  He plays well and although likes to bite I am sure this is no worse than any other puppy.  Generally an absolute dream puppy.  However, yesterday he growled quite fiercely at both myself and my 5 year old daughter twice, I had tried to pick him up when he was alseep and my daughter went to play with a toy he had.  We have a cat, the intergration seems okay, she just about tolerates him, has scratched him, but most of the time they stay apart, or rather he wants to play and she finds somewhere quiet.  I don't think there is a problem here, ("let sleeping dogs lie," possesion of a toy etc,) but my wife is naturally concerned about our 3 children, aged 5 - 10, if he should become agressive / bite / attack etc.
